About the book

Now, with her inspirational debut memoir, THE SUGARLESS PLUM: A Ballerina’s Triumph Over Diabetes, Karz shares with readers her rise within the ranks of the NYC Ballet corps, the mental and physical anguish caused by her illness, and how she was able to overcome the obstacles created by the often-debilitating condition to enjoy a full and critically-acclaimed career on stage. With THE SUGARLESS PLUM, Karz helps to raise awareness of this misunderstood illness and gives readers the confidence to know they can overcome even the most difficult of adversities to achieve their dreams.

All of this is interwoven with a detailed, inside-the-dressing-room look at what life is like for a world-class ballerina. Although being a ballerina is a fantasy for little girls around the globe, Karz guides readers through all of the tireless hard work, psychologically exhausting drama and incredible physical pain these remarkable artists endure as they bring audiences one of the most beautiful forms of entertainment mankind has ever known.

About Zippora Karz

By the age of 20, professional ballerina Zippora Karz had already fulfilled her life's dream. Having left home at the age of 15 to pursue her career on the stage, Karz had become a rising star with the New York City Ballet, winning accolades as the iconic Sugar Plum Fairy in Tchaikovsky's classic, The Nutcracker.

A year later, however, Karz nearly lost it all when she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Exhausted, thirsty and dizzy, she knew that balancing ballet and her blood sugar would be a difficult struggle. In this books, Zippora shares how she learned to value her body and work with it, rather than rage at its limitations. She discusses the mental and physical anguish caused by her illness, and ways she overcame the obstacles to enjoy a full and critically-acclaimed career in life and on stage.
